Coloring order

  1. Start with Paul's big open scroll, his red cloak, his curly hair and his beard.
  2. Use green and blue to tell apart the two younger companions sitting beside him and the small scroll one of them holds.
  3. Color the sail, ropes, barrels and jars brown, and finish with the lighthouse and white houses of the harbor in pale shades.

Questions to talk about

  • What do you think Paul is planning to write on the scroll?
  • How will the person far away feel when they read it?
  • Who far away would you like to send a letter or picture to?

Take it further

Write a short letter to someone far away, like Paul. Include one greeting line, one line of encouragement and a tiny drawing, then fold it up.

Age and time are rough guides for a child coloring alone with pencils or crayons; every child is different. The area count is an estimate counted from the line-art image.
