Coloring order

  1. Color the bedding Samuel has just sat up from and the striped rug first, then the big hanging curtain in deep blue and red.
  2. Take care with Samuel's face as he looks up with a hand on his chest, along with his blue tunic and curly hair.
  3. Color the lamp burning on the table at right and the jar in warm amber, and leave the stars in the night sky outside for last.

Questions to talk about

  • What sound do you think Samuel heard in the middle of the night?
  • How does a quiet night with only one lamp lit make you feel?
  • Have you ever answered 'Yes!' when someone called your name?

Take it further

In 1 Samuel 3 Samuel hears his name called at night and listens. Close your eyes and find three small sounds in the room, then talk about them.

Age and time are rough guides for a child coloring alone with pencils or crayons; every child is different. The area count is an estimate counted from the line-art image.
