Activity guide for this page

Recommended age: Ages 9–11
Estimated time: 35–50 min
Difficulty: Medium
Areas to color: about 180

Coloring order

Start with the sky, the clouds and the pointed mountain peaks. You can leave the tops white like snow, and color the thick pine forest in several greens.
Color the rocky cliffs, the stone tunnel entrance and the winding road in grays, then color the sleek supercar red or yellow.
Finish with the dark inside of the tunnel, the wheels, the headlights, the side air intake, the guardrail and the roadside bushes.

Questions to talk about

What is good about digging a tunnel through a mountain instead of building a road over it?
What should a driver be careful about when going from bright daylight into a dark tunnel?
Why do you think there are fewer trees and more bare rock near the mountaintops?

Take it further

Build a mountain from a cardboard box or clay, push a toilet-paper tube through it as a tunnel, and make a mountain road for your toy cars.

Age and time are rough guides for a child coloring alone with pencils or crayons; every child is different. The area count is an estimate counted from the line-art image.

Printing and coloring tips

Print on A4 or Letter in portrait to keep the original proportions.
Keep the finished version open beside you while you color.
Use slightly heavier paper with water-based markers so the ink shows through less.
Fill the large areas first and leave the small ones for later.
The finished version is only a suggestion. Any colors you like will work.
