Coloring order

  1. First, color the soil and the clear glass of the three jars standing in a row, using dark brown for the soil and a very pale blue for the glass.
  2. Each jar is at a different stage. Use deeper and deeper greens from the jar with only a seed to the little sprout to the tall plant with roots and leaves.
  3. Last, color the small red watering can Toto holds, the falling drops, the notebook and pencil in front, and the leaves by the window.

Questions to talk about

  • How much taller is the sprout in the third jar than the seed in the first?
  • What do you think Toto whispers as it waters the seeds?
  • Have you ever grown a seed or a plant in a pot? What did it look like?

Take it further

On paper, make boxes for Day 1, Day 3 and Day 5 and draw how you imagine a sprout growing. It is the first page of a seed-germination journal.

Age and time are rough guides for a child coloring alone with pencils or crayons; every child is different. The area count is an estimate counted from the line-art image.
