Coloring order

  1. Color the soft feathers on Dawnquill's head, chest and belly in pale apricot first, as fluffy as you can.
  2. On the raised wing, rotate orange, yellow and teal along each row of long feathers so they glow like sunrise.
  3. Finish the lower wing on the left, the trailing tail feathers and the hooked claws at the wing tip and feet in reddish brown.

Questions to talk about

  • Is Dawnquill about to take off or about to land?
  • What would Dawnquill most like to see first in the dawn sky?
  • Have you ever woken up early to watch the sky? What color was it?

Take it further

Cut long feather shapes from paper and tape them in rows along your sleeves, then spread your arms and swoop like Dawnquill.

Age and time are rough guides for a child coloring alone with pencils or crayons; every child is different. The area count is an estimate counted from the line-art image.
