Coloring order

  1. Start with the big shapes: Haewon's long skirt and jacket beside the wall, and the wide-brimmed straw hat in her hand, a soft golden tan.
  2. Color the long black stone wall on the right in dark gray and brown, alternating stone by stone to bring out the texture.
  3. Use blues for the sea, the rounded hill far away and the clouds, then greens and violets for the grass and hydrangeas below.

Questions to talk about

  • What is Haewon thinking about as she holds her hat and looks at the sea?
  • What sound would the sea breeze make passing through the gaps in the wall?
  • On a day at the summer beach, what was the first thing you did?

Take it further

Fold the colored page into the cover of a summery letter, and inside write a few lines describing a July sea in your own words.

Age and time are rough guides for a child coloring alone with pencils or crayons; every child is different. The area count is an estimate counted from the line-art image.
