Activity guide for this page

Recommended age: Ages 6–9
Estimated time: 30–50 min
Difficulty: Challenging
Areas to color: about 240

Coloring order

Begin with the big cloak and outer skirt of Moonlit Lantern Princess Noelle. Try navy and deep purple, and leave the thick fur trim around the hem and cloak white.
Color the underskirt showing down the middle pale sky blue, then dab its stars and crescent moons with yellow or gray. The lantern she raises in one hand looks best with a bright yellow glow inside.
Finish with the full moon in the top left, the domed palace behind her, the snowy railing posts and lamps, and the two little birds sitting at each end of the railing. Add a few more stars to the night sky.

Questions to talk about

Who do you think Noelle is looking for with her lantern tonight?
Where will the two birds on the railing sleep on this cold night?
Have you ever gone outside on a night with a full moon?

Take it further

Glue a lantern cut from yellow paper onto black paper and draw rays of light around it with a yellow crayon. Then make up a story about where the person carrying the lantern is walking.

Age and time are rough guides for a child coloring alone with pencils or crayons; every child is different. The area count is an estimate counted from the line-art image.

Printing and coloring tips

Print on A4 or Letter in portrait to keep the original proportions.
Keep the finished version open beside you while you color.
Use slightly heavier paper with water-based markers so the ink shows through less.
Fill the large areas first and leave the small ones for later.
The finished version is only a suggestion. Any colors you like will work.
