Coloring order

  1. Start with the wide tiled roof. Try a dark gray like the color sample, and slow down along the lines where the eave tips curve upward.
  2. Color the red wooden pillars and railings of Gyeonghoeru's upper floor, then alternate green and blue on the painted patterns (dancheong) under the eaves.
  3. Finish with the rows of white stone pillars on the lower level, the stone platform at the very bottom and the front steps, using light gray and beige.

Questions to talk about

  • If you stood at the upstairs railing, what might you see?
  • How does a roof with corners curving up toward the sky make you feel?
  • What did the oldest building you've seen in our neighborhood look like?

Take it further

The real Gyeonghoeru stands in a pond inside Gyeongbokgung Palace in Seoul. Draw blue ripples in the blank space below the picture and add the pillars' reflections in the water.

Age and time are rough guides for a child coloring alone with pencils or crayons; every child is different. The area count is an estimate counted from the line-art image.
