Coloring order

  1. Begin with the long tiled roof of Janggyeong Panjeon. Pull dark gray down from top to bottom along the rows of roof tiles.
  2. Color the wooden pillars standing at even spaces along the wall reddish brown, and the wall panels between them a soft cream.
  3. Finish with the rows of lattice windows on the walls, the stone base below and the small stone steps in front. A sharp colored pencil makes the lattice easier.

Questions to talk about

  • Why do you think the building has so many lattice windows?
  • What might the people who look after old wooden blocks do all day?
  • Where do you keep your most treasured things at home?

Take it further

Janggyeong Panjeon at Haeinsa Temple in Hapcheon, South Gyeongsang Province, houses the wooden printing blocks of the Tripitaka Koreana and is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Press a drawing into a foam tray with a pencil, brush on paint and print it onto paper.

Age and time are rough guides for a child coloring alone with pencils or crayons; every child is different. The area count is an estimate counted from the line-art image.
