Activity guide for this page

Recommended age: Ages 6–9
Estimated time: 35–50 min
Difficulty: Challenging
Areas to color: about 130

Coloring order

Color the long ladder of steps slanting down from the top right in yellow and gold, then fill the night sky with dark blue.
Color the robes and halos of the seven winged angels going up and down the steps, then the clothes of Jacob asleep on his mat.
Finish with the crescent moon, stars, clouds, hills, grass and flowers. Jacob's pillow can even be gray, like the stone he slept on in the Bible.

Questions to talk about

How do you think Jacob felt when he woke up from this dream?
Where might the angels be going as they climb up and down?
Have you ever slept somewhere far from home? What was it like?

Take it further

Share God's promise to Jacob in Genesis 28, "I am with you and will watch over you wherever you go." Then link strips of colored paper into a ladder long enough to reach the ceiling.

Age and time are rough guides for a child coloring alone with pencils or crayons; every child is different. The area count is an estimate counted from the line-art image.

Printing and coloring tips

Print on A4 or Letter in portrait to keep the original proportions.
Keep the finished version open beside you while you color.
Use slightly heavier paper with water-based markers so the ink shows through less.
Fill the large areas first and leave the small ones for later.
The finished version is only a suggestion. Any colors you like will work.
