Coloring order

  1. Begin with Jesus standing in the boat with open arms: his white robe, blue shawl and brown sash.
  2. Give each disciple gripping the mast a different headcloth and tunic, and color the wooden hull and thick ropes brown.
  3. Last, alternate deep blue and sky blue on the big waves below, and pale yellow for the sunbeams breaking through the clouds.

Questions to talk about

  • How did the disciples feel in the boat when the waves were so big?
  • What changed in the sky and sea when Jesus lifted his hand?
  • When were you scared and then felt calm again? What helped?

Take it further

Shake a blue cloth or sheet of paper to make waves, then show the sea slowly calming with your body. Plan together how big motions shrink into small ones.

Age and time are rough guides for a child coloring alone with pencils or crayons; every child is different. The area count is an estimate counted from the line-art image.
