Activity guide for this page

Recommended age: Ages 4–6
Estimated time: 10–20 min
Difficulty: Easy
Areas to color: about 30

Coloring order

Begin with the round body, big head and sturdy legs in gray or bluish gray, coloring each large shape evenly.
Fill the wide-open ears with pink on the inside, and match the trunk curling upward to the body's gray.
Use cream for the little tusks and a rosy pink for the smiling mouth. Do the round toenails last.

Questions to talk about

The elephant lifted its trunk high. What might it be about to do?
If this elephant flapped its big ears, what kind of breeze would it make?
If you met a friend much bigger than you, what would you like to do together?

Take it further

Stretch one arm up like a trunk and stomp around slowly. Take turns saying one thing a trunk could do, and keep the list going.

Age and time are rough guides for a child coloring alone with pencils or crayons; every child is different. The area count is an estimate counted from the line-art image.

Printing and coloring tips

Print on A4 or Letter in portrait to keep the original proportions.
Keep the finished version open beside you while you color.
Use slightly heavier paper with water-based markers so the ink shows through less.
Fill the large areas first and leave the small ones for later.
The finished version is only a suggestion. Any colors you like will work.
