Coloring order
- Start with the background: sky-blue clouds, terracotta roofs on the two pointed towers, and cream and gray for the castle walls, stone arch and cobblestones. You can do the background in one sitting and the dragon in another.
- Color Castelian's back and leg scales royal blue and the big chest and belly scales cream. Fill the wide wing membrane with pale cream and the wing bones with blue.
- Finish the crown-like horns and spikes, the round shoulder plate and the feathery tail tip in warm gold, the claws dark gray, and the ivy on the arch and the hills on the right green.
Questions to talk about
- What do you think Castelian is guarding in this castle?
- How many towers can you see? What might you spot from the top of one?
- If you were the castle's guardian dragon, how would you spend your day?
Take it further
Build a small castle and towers from boxes or paper tubes, then draw your own guardian dragon, cut it out and stand it by the castle gate.
Age and time are rough guides for a child coloring alone with pencils or crayons; every child is different. The area count is an estimate counted from the line-art image.
