Activity guide for this page

Recommended age: Ages 7–11
Estimated time: 35–55 min
Difficulty: Challenging
Areas to color: about 260

Coloring order

Begin with the wooden shelves along the left wall, the ceiling beams, and the wooden stool potter Hyunwoo sits on, coloring brown along the grain.
Color the big jar he is shaping with both hands on the pottery wheel in an orange clay tone, and his striped shirt and spotted apron in light beige.
Save the vases, teapots, and bowls on the shelves and the fire in the brick kiln on the right for last, picking green, blue, or orange for each one.

Questions to talk about

What will Hyunwoo use the jar for once it is done?
If you picked one dish from the shelves, what would you put in it?
Have you ever made something out of clay or play dough?

Take it further

Roll clay or paper clay into long ropes, then coil them round and round on top of each other to build a little cup or bowl, just like Hyunwoo.

Age and time are rough guides for a child coloring alone with pencils or crayons; every child is different. The area count is an estimate counted from the line-art image.

The black-and-white line art you print and color, with clear outlines and wide areas that suit younger children.

Printing and coloring tips

Print on A4 or Letter in portrait to keep the original proportions.
Keep the finished version open beside you while you color.
Use slightly heavier paper with water-based markers so the ink shows through less.
Fill the large areas first and leave the small ones for later.
The finished version is only a suggestion. Any colors you like will work.
