Coloring order

  1. Start with the two paper cups joined by string, one in Nari's hand and one by Toto on the stool. Add a stripe of color around each white cup.
  2. Color Nari's green jacket, yellow shorts and white sneakers as she walks along happily, and the round ripple-pattern rug on the floor in teal and sky blue.
  3. Last, color the books and globe on the shelf, the chairs and the lines showing the sound spreading, giving each its own color.

Questions to talk about

  • Will Toto's voice come through better if you pull the string tight?
  • What secret word do you think Nari whispered into the cup?
  • Have you ever passed a sound to a friend standing far away?

Take it further

Following the cup-and-string sound experiment, connect two paper cups with string and whisper to a friend. Compare how it sounds with the string loose and tight.

Age and time are rough guides for a child coloring alone with pencils or crayons; every child is different. The area count is an estimate counted from the line-art image.
