Coloring order

  1. Start with the roofs of the tile-roofed houses in Hahoe Village. Use dark gray on the two back houses and the big front roof, keeping the back roofs a little lighter so they look farther away.
  2. Color the wooden doors and pillars of each house brown and the white walls between them a soft off-white. Make the big double doors in the center a bit darker.
  3. Color the round stones of the base and wall at the bottom one by one in gray and brown, then finish with the stone steps in the middle.

Questions to talk about

  • Which room in these houses would you like to live in?
  • What games might children have played in the yard?
  • Have you seen a house like this at a grandparent's home or in the countryside?

Take it further

Andong Hahoe Village is an old village in Andong, North Gyeongsang Province, also well known for its Hahoe masks. Draw a smiling mask face on a paper plate, have an adult cut eye holes, then wear it and act out a villager.

Age and time are rough guides for a child coloring alone with pencils or crayons; every child is different. The area count is an estimate counted from the line-art image.
