Coloring order

  1. Color David's cream tunic, the red cloth over his shoulder and his sandal straps first.
  2. Use grays and browns, a slightly different mix for each, on the smooth stone in his hand and the round stones along the bank.
  3. Finish with the sheep grazing behind him, the tents on the far hills, and the grass and leaves on the right in greens and yellows.

Questions to talk about

  • Why do you think David looks at each stone so carefully?
  • What might the sheep be thinking as they watch David's back?
  • Have you ever had a fluttery heart before something big?

Take it further

Hunt for five smooth stones in the yard or park and compare their sizes and weights. Never throw them. Line them up in a basket and decorate each one with crayons.

Age and time are rough guides for a child coloring alone with pencils or crayons; every child is different. The area count is an estimate counted from the line-art image.
