Coloring order

  1. Start with Mary's blue cloak and rose-colored dress, and Elizabeth's striped purple shawl.
  2. Color the arms wrapped around each other, the beaming faces and the white veils in bright, light shades.
  3. Finish with the man standing at the back left, the stone doorway, the grapevine overhead and the fruit basket below.

Questions to talk about

  • What was the very first thing Mary and Elizabeth said to each other?
  • What might the man watching from near the door be thinking?
  • Who did you finally see again after a long time? How did you greet them?

Take it further

Invent a welcome greeting. Two people stand face to face, pick a hug or a wave, and then make up the words Mary and Elizabeth might have said.

Age and time are rough guides for a child coloring alone with pencils or crayons; every child is different. The area count is an estimate counted from the line-art image.
