Activity guide for this page

Recommended age: Ages 4–7
Estimated time: 15–25 min
Difficulty: Easy
Areas to color: about 45

Coloring order

Start with the wide sandy beach and the sea in front, splitting the water into light blue and deeper blue along the wavy shoreline.
Color Jonah's robe, belt and beard as he kneels with folded hands, then the smiling whale spouting water in shades of blue.
Finish with the palm trees on the island to the right, the seagulls in the sky, and the clouds.

Questions to talk about

What is Jonah thanking God for as he kneels on the beach?
If the whale in the picture could talk, what would it say to Jonah?
What is one thing you felt thankful for today?

Take it further

Explain that the Bible calls it a "great fish" and this picture draws it as a smiling whale. Then, like Jonah's thankful prayer, everyone writes one thing they are thankful for on a paper fish and posts it on the wall.

Age and time are rough guides for a child coloring alone with pencils or crayons; every child is different. The area count is an estimate counted from the line-art image.

Printing and coloring tips

Print on A4 or Letter in portrait to keep the original proportions.
Keep the finished version open beside you while you color.
Use slightly heavier paper with water-based markers so the ink shows through less.
Fill the large areas first and leave the small ones for later.
The finished version is only a suggestion. Any colors you like will work.
