Activity guide for this page

Recommended age: Ages 8–12
Estimated time: 50–80 min
Difficulty: Challenging
Areas to color: about 320

Coloring order

Begin with the wavy aurora lines across the sky in green and purple, then fill the night sky between them with deep navy.
Color the Model X Plaid deep blue, and use different colors for the chunky grooved snow tires and the wooden charging post on the right.
Then color the warm light behind the cabin's big windows, the stone chimney, the snowy firs, the ice on the lake and the village across it. Leave the snow piles white.

Questions to talk about

On an aurora night, who is inside the glass cabin, and what are they doing?
Where do you think the tire tracks in the snow began?
Have you gone outside on a very snowy day? What did you do?

Take it further

Dot stars on black paper with a white crayon, then smudge green and purple pastel with your finger to make a glowing band of light like the aurora in the picture.

Age and time are rough guides for a child coloring alone with pencils or crayons; every child is different. The area count is an estimate counted from the line-art image.

Printing and coloring tips

Print on A4 or Letter in portrait to keep the original proportions.
Keep the finished version open beside you while you color.
Use slightly heavier paper with water-based markers so the ink shows through less.
Fill the large areas first and leave the small ones for later.
The finished version is only a suggestion. Any colors you like will work.
