Activity guide for this page

Recommended age: Ages 8–12
Estimated time: 55–85 min
Difficulty: Challenging
Areas to color: about 370

Coloring order

First, color the autumn leaves hanging in from top left and the forest in the middle in broad yellow and orange, keeping the pointed fir trees green.
Shade the silver body of the Model Y Performance lightly in pale gray, then press harder for the red parts inside the wheels and the sharp headlight outline.
Last, add the scaly shingles on the wooden shelter roof, the empty sign board, the picnic table, the wavy bike rack and the fallen leaves on the ground.

Questions to talk about

What trail directions might go on the blank sign board on the right?
What might you find if you followed this mountain trail up?
Have you ever stepped on fallen leaves in autumn? What did they sound like?

Take it further

Put a few differently shaped leaves under paper and rub with a crayon's side to reveal the veins, then compare them with the leaves in the picture.

Age and time are rough guides for a child coloring alone with pencils or crayons; every child is different. The area count is an estimate counted from the line-art image.

Printing and coloring tips

Print on A4 or Letter in portrait to keep the original proportions.
Keep the finished version open beside you while you color.
Use slightly heavier paper with water-based markers so the ink shows through less.
Fill the large areas first and leave the small ones for later.
The finished version is only a suggestion. Any colors you like will work.
