Activity guide for this page

Recommended age: Ages 9–11
Estimated time: 35–50 min
Difficulty: Medium
Areas to color: about 180

Coloring order

Start with the sky, the clouds and the wide sea. Use deep blue far out and light blue near the breaking waves, leaving the white foam uncolored.
Color the seaside cliffs and bushes brown and green and the winding road gray, then color the open-top Roadster red or silver.
Finish carefully with the seats inside, the wheel rims, the guardrail and wooden posts, the rocks in the water, and the lighthouse and small house on the far headland.

Questions to talk about

How does a lighthouse help ships passing by at night?
Why do you think the cliff road has a long guardrail with wooden posts?
If you rode along this road in a car with no roof, what sounds and smells might you notice?

Take it further

Draw this coastal road as a map seen from above. Mark the lighthouse, the cliffs, the curves and the rocks, and give your drive route its own name.

Age and time are rough guides for a child coloring alone with pencils or crayons; every child is different. The area count is an estimate counted from the line-art image.

Printing and coloring tips

Print on A4 or Letter in portrait to keep the original proportions.
Keep the finished version open beside you while you color.
Use slightly heavier paper with water-based markers so the ink shows through less.
Fill the large areas first and leave the small ones for later.
The finished version is only a suggestion. Any colors you like will work.
