Activity guide for this page

Recommended age: Ages 6–9
Estimated time: 25–40 min
Difficulty: Challenging
Areas to color: about 200

Coloring order

Start with the puppy sitting up front: color its body, floppy ears, and tail honey or golden brown, leaving only the tongue for pink.
Split the puppy's Santa hat into red and white, then color the layered branches of the tree behind it and its round ornaments.
Finish with the two stockings and flames at the fireplace, the round braided rug, and the open present box in the bottom right corner.

Questions to talk about

What do you think came out of the open box?
Why might the puppy be smiling so big?
Where does your family gather to stay cozy on cold days?

Take it further

Give the Christmas puppy a name, then tell the story of its day by the fireplace in three sentences. A teacher or parent can write it down to tape under the picture.

Age and time are rough guides for a child coloring alone with pencils or crayons; every child is different. The area count is an estimate counted from the line-art image.

Printing and coloring tips

Print on A4 or Letter in portrait to keep the original proportions.
Keep the finished version open beside you while you color.
Use slightly heavier paper with water-based markers so the ink shows through less.
Fill the large areas first and leave the small ones for later.
The finished version is only a suggestion. Any colors you like will work.
