Coloring order

  1. Color the squirrel's body and big curling tail chestnut brown first, keeping the area under its chin and its tummy cream.
  2. Make the vest it's wearing red, then let the acorn-shaped lantern in its paws glow with yellow and gold.
  3. Finish with the tiny bulbs on the light string around the branch, the two pinecones and holly berries at top left, and the broad leaves.

Questions to talk about

  • Where would the squirrel like to hang its acorn lantern?
  • What would it look like if each bulb lit up a different color?
  • Have you ever spotted a squirrel or a bird outside in winter?

Take it further

On a walk or at the playground, collect a few pinecones and leaves and set them beside your Christmas squirrel page. Feel the pinecone's scales with your fingers, then try drawing their shape.

Age and time are rough guides for a child coloring alone with pencils or crayons; every child is different. The area count is an estimate counted from the line-art image.
