Activity guide for this page

Recommended age: Ages 6–9
Estimated time: 30–45 min
Difficulty: Challenging
Areas to color: about 140

Coloring order

Start with the water beyond the arched aquarium tunnel, filling it broadly in teal or sky blue, and color the tunnel's curved frames gray.
Next color marine biologist Ara's wetsuit, the diving mask pushed up on her forehead, and her backpack straps, then give the big sea turtle swimming overhead a brown shell.
Save the coral, sea anemone, and starfish in the lower left and the school of striped fish up top for last, mixing orange, purple, and yellow one by one.

Questions to talk about

What do you think Ara is writing about the fish on her clipboard?
Where might the sea turtle swim after it passes over the tunnel?
Do you remember any sea creature you saw at an aquarium or the beach?

Take it further

Draw a big fish on paper, cut it out, and add stripes or spots. Then make your own observation card like Ara's, writing down its name, colors, and pattern.

Age and time are rough guides for a child coloring alone with pencils or crayons; every child is different. The area count is an estimate counted from the line-art image.

Printing and coloring tips

Print on A4 or Letter in portrait to keep the original proportions.
Keep the finished version open beside you while you color.
Use slightly heavier paper with water-based markers so the ink shows through less.
Fill the large areas first and leave the small ones for later.
The finished version is only a suggestion. Any colors you like will work.
