Coloring order

  1. Begin with the dirt wall on the left that holds the dinosaur bones and the cliffs behind it in ochre and brown, then color the sky pale blue.
  2. Color paleontologist Bow's explorer hat, his many-pocketed vest, and his shorts, then make the skeleton in the dirt wall a light cream so the bones stand out from the earth.
  3. Finish with the tent and dinosaur flag on the right and the shovels, sieve, and brushes on the ground, choosing a different color for each handle.

Questions to talk about

  • Which part of the dinosaur bones is Bow brushing clean?
  • If this dinosaur were alive, what sound might it make?
  • Have you ever dug for something in a sandbox or at the playground?

Take it further

Bury a few blocks or spoons in a tub of sand or rice, then gently brush them out with a paintbrush and play fossil hunters just like Bow.

Age and time are rough guides for a child coloring alone with pencils or crayons; every child is different. The area count is an estimate counted from the line-art image.
