Coloring order
- Color the huge stage curtains hanging on both sides and the gathered drapes above in deep red or burgundy first, then do the wooden stage floor plank by plank in brown.
- Color ballerina Jian's layered tutu, her bodice, the roses in her hair, and her ribbon-tied pointe shoes in pinks, mixing darker and lighter shades.
- Finish with the chandelier, the tassels holding back the curtains, the pattern on the balcony railing, and the little footlights, using yellow and gold.
Questions to talk about
- What kind of music is Jian dancing to with one leg lifted?
- What might the people sitting in the balcony be thinking?
- Have you ever been up on a stage? How did it feel?
Take it further
In an open space, play some gentle music and stretch one arm high and lift one leg behind you like Jian. When the music stops, freeze in that pose.
Age and time are rough guides for a child coloring alone with pencils or crayons; every child is different. The area count is an estimate counted from the line-art image.
