Coloring order

  1. Start with the navy gown, and add a pale silver or sky blue over the white panel running down the skirt.
  2. Then color the long silvery curls flowing past her shoulders, the crescent-moon lantern in her hand and the butterflies nearby.
  3. Last, color the big full moon, the domed observatory roof at upper right, the large white moonflowers and the bridge railing.

Questions to talk about

  • What kind of light does her crescent-moon lantern give off?
  • If you could name the brightest star in the sky, what would you call it?
  • Have you noticed that the moon looks different from night to night?

Take it further

Cut out crescent, half and full moon shapes from paper, line them up in order, and compare them with the moon tonight.

Age and time are rough guides for a child coloring alone with pencils or crayons; every child is different. The area count is an estimate counted from the line-art image.
