Coloring order
- Start with the big fish tail: teal on the scaly part, then pink for the fan-shaped fin at the end.
- Next, color her long wavy hair, the little seahorse on one hand, and the pearl inside the open shell she holds in the other.
- Last, use several ocean shades for the coral and seashells behind her, the rising bubbles and the faraway underwater palace.
Questions to talk about
- What story might the tiny seahorse on her hand be telling?
- What rooms do you think are inside the palace under the sea?
- Have you ever looked underwater at a pool or the beach?
Take it further
Cut wavy strips of blue and green paper, glue them down, then add drawn shells and fish to build your own small underwater scene.
Age and time are rough guides for a child coloring alone with pencils or crayons; every child is different. The area count is an estimate counted from the line-art image.
