Coloring order

  1. Start with the curved stone wall that bends toward the front. Mix light gray and beige across the bricks, and color the inside of the arched gate in the middle dark.
  2. Color the tiled roofs of the two-story pavilion over the gate dark gray and its pillars red, then add green and red to the painted patterns under the eaves.
  3. Finish with the two small watchtowers on each side, the notched parapet along the top of the wall and the little square openings in it.

Questions to talk about

  • What might guards have watched for from the small towers?
  • What kind of town might you find through the arched gate?
  • If our neighborhood had a gate this big, what would you name it?

Take it further

Suwon Hwaseong is a Joseon-era fortress in Suwon, Gyeonggi Province, and a UNESCO World Heritage site. Build a curved wall and gate from blocks or boxes, then take turns as gatekeeper and visitor in a secret-password word game.

Age and time are rough guides for a child coloring alone with pencils or crayons; every child is different. The area count is an estimate counted from the line-art image.
