Coloring order

  1. Begin with the baby penguin's back, head, and flippers in black or deep navy, leaving the white tummy and face uncolored.
  2. Color the round earmuffs and the striped scarf red, then give the candy cane in its flipper alternating red and white stripes.
  3. Finish with the snowman's hat and carrot nose, the glow of the two lampposts, and the frozen pond's edge. You could make the sky a night sky, too.

Questions to talk about

  • With its eyes closed, how do you think the penguin feels?
  • What might the snowman and the penguin be chatting about?
  • What do we put on before going outside on a cold day?

Take it further

Draw slanted red lines across a strip of white paper to make your own candy cane pattern. Try spacing the stripes wide, then narrow, and compare them with the candy cane the Christmas penguin is holding.

Age and time are rough guides for a child coloring alone with pencils or crayons; every child is different. The area count is an estimate counted from the line-art image.
