Activity guide for this page

Recommended age: Ages 8–11
Estimated time: 40–60 min
Difficulty: Challenging
Areas to color: about 260

Coloring order

Color Solavion's wide-open wings feather by feather, starting with pale yellow near the body and deepening to orange toward the tips.
Use cream for the long curved neck and the rows of belly scales, and a stronger yellow for the pointed mane rising behind the head.
Last, go over the flame-like feathers at the tail tip, the claws and the eye with a fine pencil so they stand out clearly.

Questions to talk about

Where do you think Solavion is flying with its wings spread so wide?
If you used only warm, sunny colors, what would the sky around it look like?
Can you remember a warm, sunny day? Where were you?

Take it further

Cut long feather shapes from yellow and orange paper and overlap them to build a pair of wings for Solavion. Then flap them like a dragon!

Age and time are rough guides for a child coloring alone with pencils or crayons; every child is different. The area count is an estimate counted from the line-art image.

Printing and coloring tips

Print on A4 or Letter in portrait to keep the original proportions.
Keep the finished version open beside you while you color.
Use slightly heavier paper with water-based markers so the ink shows through less.
Fill the large areas first and leave the small ones for later.
The finished version is only a suggestion. Any colors you like will work.
