Coloring order

  1. Begin with the sky, sunbeams, clouds and distant mountains, the castle and wooden scaffolds on the right, and the big and small hot-air balloons, giving each balloon its own stripe colors.
  2. Color Volarune's body cream, alternate cobalt, coral and golden yellow across the layered feather scales and the pennant tail, and make the braided rope on the neck gold.
  3. Color the straps, rings and hanging ribbons of the sail-shaped wing, then finish the wooden dock, the rope-wrapped mooring posts and the trunks in the lower left in browns.

Questions to talk about

  • Where far away do you think Volarune flew from before landing at this sky harbor?
  • How many hot-air balloons are floating in the sky? Let's count them.
  • If you went on a balloon trip, what would you pack in your trunk?

Take it further

Tape paper strips onto a balloon and hang a small paper-cup basket underneath to make your own hot-air balloon, then make up a story about a trip with Volarune.

Age and time are rough guides for a child coloring alone with pencils or crayons; every child is different. The area count is an estimate counted from the line-art image.
