Coloring order

  1. Fill Mercury's round body with one grayish brown first. Make the eyes dark and color the inside of the smile pink.
  2. Color the inside of each big round crater a deeper brown. For the tiny circle dents, dab the crayon on in little taps.
  3. Use yellow for the small Sun in the top right and the three beams reaching toward Mercury. Finish with the orbit line and stars.

Questions to talk about

  • Mercury has so many round dents. How do you think they got there?
  • Sunlight is streaming toward Mercury from the top right. How does it feel?
  • Have you ever dug a hole in a sandbox? How big did it get?

Take it further

Draw lots of craters on paper with brown and gray crayons, then give each one a funny name to make your own map of Mercury.

Age and time are rough guides for a child coloring alone with pencils or crayons; every child is different. The area count is an estimate counted from the line-art image.
