Coloring order

  1. Color the wide stone base of Dabotap and the stone stairs in the middle a warm sand color like the sample. Give the top and front of each step a slightly different shade.
  2. Color the square stone pillars at the four corners above the base and the ring of stone railing on top of them. Keep the parts that stick out bright and the inner parts a little darker.
  3. Finish with the round roof stones that get smaller toward the top and the pointed ornament at the very tip. You can lightly trace the lines between stones with a pencil.

Questions to talk about

  • How do you think people stacked stones this high?
  • What might be waiting at the top of Dabotap's stairs?
  • What things around us are made of stone?

Take it further

Dabotap is a Silla-era stone pagoda at Bulguksa Temple in Gyeongju, and it also appears on the Korean 10-won coin. With an adult, place a coin under paper, rub over it with a pencil, and compare the pagoda print with this picture.

Age and time are rough guides for a child coloring alone with pencils or crayons; every child is different. The area count is an estimate counted from the line-art image.
