Coloring order

  1. Start with the olive tree's leaves, olives and thick trunk across the top left, then the hills behind in slightly different greens.
  2. Color the head cloth and tunic of smiling David as he plays, the curved wooden frame and strings of his lyre, and the lamb asleep at his feet.
  3. Leave the three sheep on the hill, the stream winding off to the right with its stones, and the wildflowers along the bottom for last.

Questions to talk about

  • What song might David be playing beside the sleeping lamb?
  • How do you think young David cared for his sheep every day?
  • Have you ever taken care of someone? How did it feel?

Take it further

Read the opening line of Psalm 23, "The Lord is my shepherd," together. Then stretch rubber bands over an empty box to make a little lyre and strum it while singing, like David.

Age and time are rough guides for a child coloring alone with pencils or crayons; every child is different. The area count is an estimate counted from the line-art image.
