Activity guide for this page

Recommended age: Ages 5–8
Estimated time: 30–40 min
Difficulty: Medium
Areas to color: about 110

Coloring order

The night sky in the window is already filled in black, so color the stone arch around it and the big wall stones in beige and pale gray.
Color Samuel's curly hair, long robe and belt as he prays with closed eyes and folded hands, then the lamp flame on the stone pillar in yellow and orange.
Give the patterned rug one color for its border and another for the center design, and finish with the wooden bench on the left and the floor stones.

Questions to talk about

What do you think young Samuel is saying as he prays?
How do you think Samuel felt when God called his name in the night?
How do you answer when someone calls your name?

Take it further

Read 1 Samuel 3, then play a listening game: one child softly calls a friend's name, and the friend answers, "Speak, I'm listening," just as Samuel learned to answer God.

Age and time are rough guides for a child coloring alone with pencils or crayons; every child is different. The area count is an estimate counted from the line-art image.

Printing and coloring tips

Print on A4 or Letter in portrait to keep the original proportions.
Keep the finished version open beside you while you color.
Use slightly heavier paper with water-based markers so the ink shows through less.
Fill the large areas first and leave the small ones for later.
The finished version is only a suggestion. Any colors you like will work.
