Ways to use this collection
An individual-sports set: archery with Mongolia, sprinting with Jamaica, and the marathon with Kenya, plus one more archery page and venue scenes of rhythmic gymnastics, climbing and a sprint start. Drawing a bow in a still pose, bursting off the line, and settling into a long-distance rhythm are very different movements, and because each athlete competes alone, the set is also a natural way to bring up setting a personal goal.
Activity ideas
- Put the sprint and marathon pages side by side, guess which race ends sooner and which takes longer, then try a short dash and some marching in place.
- After coloring the archery page, toss soft bean bags at a paper-cup target from a taped line on the floor and keep score together.
- Find Mongolia, Jamaica, and Kenya on a world map and add a sticker to each, then pick one individual sport you would like to try and say why.
Tip Have children pick a still pose or a running pose and introduce today’s athlete; the venue scenes have many areas, so give ages 7 and up more than 30 minutes.
