Ways to use this collection
Water sports: surfing with Australia, swimmer Sua doing freestyle, surfer Kai in a tropical cove and young sculler Ian on an alpine lake. Balancing on a wave and slicing through the water give you a chance to decide how to show water, so even one blue can be tried in many different ways, and each page draws the water in its own way.
Activity ideas
- Do not stop at one blue: alternate pale sky blue, teal, and navy over the water so the waves gain depth, and see how many different blues you can find.
- With an adult watching and only a shallow basin, sort items that float from items that sink, and ask where a surfboard might belong.
- Draw the things to pack for the pool (a swim cap, goggles, a towel) next to Sua to make your own swim checklist.
Tip The two character-only pages take children age 5 and up about 20 to 30 minutes; allow around 40 minutes for the beach and lake scenes.
